Gardening Symposium
Christopher Newport’s Lifelong Learning Society (LLS) will present the 21st annual Gardening Symposium on Saturday, March 24, 2018, from 7 a.m. – 3:45 p.m., in the Freeman Center. This year’s theme is Creative Gardening: Where Small Spaces Meet Nature at Large, and will include plant sales and variety of informative workshops presented by authors, farmers, expert gardeners and designers.
Guest speakers will include:
- Joel Bunn was 2016-17 Magna Vista teacher of the year, and served on the faculty of Virginia Tech as an extension agent in 4-H youth development.
- Doug Tallamy is a nationally acclaimed lecturer and professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware. He has authored 87 research publications and taught ecology, humans and nature, insect ecology, and other courses.
- Lisa Ziegler is a cut-flower farmer, author and nationally recognized speaker on organic gardening.

Writers Conference
LLS will present the 37th annual Writers Conference May 4–5, 2018. The two-day event will take place at the Freeman Center, and is designed to improve writing skills and bring together both published and aspiring authors.
This year’s keynote speaker is Barbara O'Connor, author of award-winning novels for children, including How to Steal a Dog, The Small Adventure of Popeye and Elvis, and The Fantastic Secret of Owen Jester. In addition to six Parents Choice Awards, Barbara’s distinctions include School Library Journal Best Books, Kirkus Best Books, Bank Street College Best Books and ALA Notables.
Conference workshops will include the following:
- The Art of the Narrative
- Writing Your Life
- Writing for the Screen
- Writing Nonfiction Imaginatively
- Hints for Polishing Your Fiction Submission
- The Well-Stocked Revision Toolbox
- The Art of the Narrative
- Writing Letter Poetry
