The American Chemical Society has awarded Dr. Steven Harris, lecturer of chemistry, a $5,000 Project SEED grant. Project SEED is a summer research internship program for economically disadvantaged, high-achieving high school chemistry students.

Participants will work on a chemistry-focused research project supervised by a Christopher Newport University faculty member. Faculty mentors will help participants develop laboratory, written and oral skills.

"The Project SEED students will have an unrivaled opportunity to gain hands-on laboratory experience while working side by side with not only college researchers but faculty as well," Harris says. "Students will also receive individual mentoring, tips for career and college planning, and seminars to help improve their presentation skills which will increase their scientific knowledge base and overall career outlook."

Harris specializes in nucleic acid structure/function relationships. He holds a PhD from the University of Oklahoma.
