Saying it “provides a private school atmosphere at a public university cost,” the Princeton Review named Christopher Newport University one of the nation’s best colleges for students seeking a superb education with great career preparation at an affordable cost.
Christopher Newport, with its “encouraging, engaging” faculty, is profiled by the education services company in the 2019 edition of its annual guide, "The Best Value Colleges: 200 Schools with Exceptional ROI for Your Tuition Investment," published by Penguin Random House/Princeton Review Books. Information on the book, including school profiles, is accessible at the link below.
The Princeton Review selected Christopher Newport as one of the top 200 after collecting data and conducting surveys at more than 650 colleges. The editors praised Christopher Newport’s focus on the study of leadership, its core curriculum in the arts and sciences and the commitment of its students to civic engagement through community service.
Students describe Christopher Newport’s “stunning campus” as an “oasis” and a “castle” but where “everything is new and has the best technology.” There is “a sense of expectation” in academic pursuits by students and faculty, “not because it’s required but because we know we are capable of achieving great things.” Students say Christopher Newport’s residence halls are “spacious and high quality,” that there’s a “culture of kindness” on campus, and that the university is “small enough to know people of various majors and interests but large enough to continue to meet new people every day.”
Princeton Review Editor-in-Chief Robert Franek says the universities making the list have relatively low sticker prices and graduate students who go on to earn relatively high salaries. “Students at these colleges have access to extraordinary career services from their freshman year on, plus a lifetime of valuable alumni support.”
Christopher Newport was one of only four public universities in Virginia (along with the College of William & Mary, University of Virginia and Virginia Tech) and one of only 63 public universities nationwide to be included “Best Value Colleges: 2019 Edition."
