Christopher Newport and Thomas Nelson Community College have launched the Captains Connection – an innovative program to increase the number of job-ready graduates in high-demand technology and engineering fields.
Thomas Nelson students will have earlier access to Christopher Newport courses, reducing the time it takes a student to earn a degree in computer engineering, computer science and information science, and systems/cybersecurity.
“This program will save students time and money, and it promotes access and opportunity for hard working, qualified Peninsula students,” President Trible said at the announcement ceremony. “We are excited about strengthening our relationship with Thomas Nelson and preparing more students with skills critical to Virginia’s economy.”
“Thomas Nelson is delighted to be entering into this special partnership with Christopher Newport that will strongly promote and support students in pursuing these high-demand careers that are vital for the prosperity of the Virginia Peninsula and Commonwealth,” said Thomas Nelson President John Dever.
Under the terms of the agreement:
- Students can come to Christopher Newport early and begin their progress toward a baccalaureate degree, and at the same time earn their associate degree from Thomas Nelson by transferring credits back to Thomas Nelson.
- Thomas Nelson students will be offered academic, career and financial aid advising at Christopher Newport, as well as access to all athletic events.
- Renewable $5,000 scholarships will be available for qualifying Thomas Nelson students to defray the cost of their Christopher Newport coursework.
To qualify for those benefits, Thomas Nelson students must complete a Letter of Intent. The Captains Connection will be available to Thomas Nelson students beginning this fall.
