From “happiest students” to “most beautiful campus,” new rankings from the Princeton Review put Christopher Newport among the nation’s elite universities in key areas of interest to students.

Christopher Newport is ranked one of the nation’s best 385 colleges, one of the best in the Southeast and one of the nation’s best values. It is also ranked among the nation’s top 20 universities in these categories:

  • Most Engaged in Community Service (#12)
  • Best College Dorms (#14)
  • Best Quality of Life (#16)
  • Happiest Students (#16)
  • Most Beautiful Campus (#17)
  • Best-Run Colleges (#18)
  • Their Students Love These Colleges (#18)

“We are proud of all the rankings, but especially the recognition for community service because it demonstrates that our students lead, serve, engage and set the world on fire,” said Christopher Newport President Paul Trible.

The rankings are included in the 2020 edition of Princeton Review’s “The Best 385 Colleges.” The book highlights institutions selected as among the best of the nation’s 3,000 four-year colleges and universities.

The publisher chooses the colleges based on data it annually collects from administrators about their institutions’ academic offerings. The Princeton Review also considers data it gathers from its surveys of college students who rate and report on various aspects of their campus and community experiences for this project.

In their comments, students said Christopher Newport offers undergraduates “a private school atmosphere at a public school cost.” Students highlighted what they see as a culture of kindness on campus. “It isn’t uncommon for someone you don’t know on campus to acknowledge you and ask how you’re doing that day,” said one student. “My peers are like my second family, and it is so easy to call this campus home,” said another. Added a third: “We will hold doors open for others and we will smile and say hello.”

“We salute Christopher Newport for its outstanding academics and we are truly pleased to recommend it to prospective applicants searching for their personal ‘best-fit’ college,” said Robert Franek, The Princeton Review’s editor-in-chief and lead author of The Best 385 Colleges.
