Christopher Newport’s psychology program is ranked No. 3 in the nation and is the only Virginia college or university in the top 10, according to learn.org.
“Psychology students at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia have plenty of opportunities to gain important research experience outside of the classroom, including internships that can take place at local hospitals or clinics,” learn.org wrote in its description of the program that was included in its Top 50 Schools with Psychology Bachelor Programs list.
Campuses in the University of Minnesota, University of North Carolina and Arizona State University systems joined Christopher Newport near the top of the rankings.
“We are proud of this ranking and honored to be in the company of so many fine universities,” said Dr. Timothy Marshall, chair of the Department of Psychology. “Our faculty, administrators and students give their best every day, and to be considered among the top programs in the country validates that effort.”
Learn.org said its rankings are based on factors that include the university’s academic and career resources, the quality of education, faculty and more.
Christopher Newport offers both bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees in psychology. Students study and master the literature and methods of psychology and are offered numerous opportunities for research alongside faculty. Alumni often continue their education at prominent graduate schools or begin careers as counselors, social service advocates or teachers.
Learn.org noted the breadth of offerings, saying, “This school offers a notable bachelor of science in psychology degree and a great bachelor of arts in psychology degree, both of which prepare students for a range of careers in social services, human resources, or public relations. Students interested in education can choose the fantastic 5-year dual bachelor's in psychology and master of arts in teaching program.”
This is the most recent in a series of impressive rankings for psychology. Earlier this year, the program was ranked among the top 7% in the nation and among the four best in Virginia, according to the College Factual rankings website.
