Holiday Happening, Christopher Newport’s traditional annual concert, usually thrills standing-room-only audiences in the Ferguson Center for the Arts. That’s not possible this year, but the jingle bells won’t be silent. WHRO, PBS in Hampton Roads and surrounding area, will broadcast the entire hour-long production at 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 20.
If you miss the show that night, you’ll be able to see it in its entirety on the WHRO website and on the CNU YouTube channel.
The production features hundreds of Christopher Newport students performing with faculty members in several festive locations on campus. The program includes:
- Herald trumpets
- The Marching Captains
- Chamber Choir / University Chorale
- Jazz Ensemble
- Harp Ensemble
- University Orchestra
- Gospel pianist Don Morse
- Percussion Ensemble
- Organ
- Wind Ensemble
As is traditional, President Paul Trible will open the show and theater professor emeritus George Hillow will be the master of ceremonies. Also appearing will be Dr. Mark Reimer, director of music, the George and Mary Torggler Professor of Music and distinguished professor of music.
“I would like to offer a very special thank you to the wonderful folks at WHRO public television and all our faithful sponsors and patrons throughout the years,” Reimer said.
Holiday Happening usually closes with a performance of "Jingle All the Way," with the crowd in the Diamonstein Concert Hall lending its voice to the big finish. That tradition, too, will have a new twist.
Reimer will encourage WHRO viewers, in their homes, to sing along with the Music Theatre Vocalists, the Wind Ensemble and University Orchestra.
