It's the morning after the crowd surge in Itaewon last night. Luckily I didn’t go to Itaewon, but a couple of my friends did and although they are safe physically, mentally I think they’re struggling to process things.

It's shocking to be having fun, feeling like you’re having the time of your life and then you wake up the next morning to news articles reporting numbers of people dead or injured from an area only half an hour away from you.

I know this is a dire and sad subject, but I think this incident made me more aware of how dangerous it can be in a foreign country. Studying abroad is like living a fever dream and sometimes people make “having fun” be the top priority of their time.

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t have a good time while studying abroad. But what I am saying is that you should be safer while going out in a foreign country. You already have to take precautions back at home, so just be extra smart while going out in a country where you are a foreigner.
