The Mary M. Torggler Fine Arts Center is celebrating its one year anniversary with an extraordinary exhibition featuring works of American photographer Ansel Adams (1902-1984). Ansel Adams: Compositions in Nature, will be on view now through March 5, 2023 in the Anne Noland Edwards Gallery.
Immerse yourself in the wonder of the American wilderness, as you experience nearly 70 of Adams’ works, some of them beloved images – others never-before published photographs. Complementing the exhibition is Adams’ own recordings of classical music, which helps build a comprehensive picture of the artist’s career.
“As an artist, Adams inspired generations of photographers, and his compelling artworks have helped us to envision and appreciate the natural abundance of this country.”
Renowned for his iconic black-and-white prints of landscapes throughout the United States, Adams’ striking compositions and techniques have amazed audiences for generations, as well as elevated photography as an art form throughout the 20th century. His thoughtful use of light and shadow highlight often forgotten and overlooked beauty in the natural world, inviting viewers to focus on patterns, textures and contrasting components that would otherwise pass you by. A lifelong advocate for environmental protection, Adams’ prints celebrate the magnificence of nature to share its importance with us all.
The exhibit coincides with the one-year anniversary of the Torggler opening its doors to the public.
“The core theme of nature has underpinned all the exhibitions we’ve mounted during our inaugural year, so the Torggler is delighted to present the works of Ansel Adams, whose name is synonymous with images of the majestic American wilderness,” said Holly Koons, Executive Director of the Mary M. Torggler Fine Arts Center. “As an artist, Adams inspired generations of photographers, and his compelling artworks have helped us to envision and appreciate the natural abundance of this country.”
This exhibition is organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Turtle Bay Exploration Park, Redding, California, managed by Landau Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles.
The exhibition is free and open to the public.
