Student Involvement - Christopher Newport University

Student Involvement

Our office supports student organizations and creates intentional programs to develop student leadership opportunities and campus engagement. Thursday Night Trivia, DSU Takeovers and Fireside Lounge are just a few examples of the fantastic events we provide for students.

Class Year Programs

Freshman

  • First 6 Weeks
    • The first six weeks of a student's college experience are vital for them to transition, get connected, be successful and persist to graduation. During this time, we offer various events and opportunities for students to connect with each other and get to know the campus and their peers better. Additionally, students will have access to a calendar of events specific to their first year that will showcase important dates and deadlines, campus events, etc.

Sophomore

  • Signing day
    • At the beginning of the spring semester, the Center for Student Success (CSS) hosts Signing Day, which is where students sign their commitment to the major of their choice. We often provide additional programming to help celebrate this milestone in their college journey.
  • Halfway til the Tassel Turns
    • In collaboration with the Office of Alumni Relations, we celebrate students being halfway through their college experience. At this event, they will receive their halfway pin.

Senior

  • Anchors Aweigh
    • Anchors Aweigh is a senior transition workshop series hosted to help prepare our graduating seniors for post-graduation life. Workshops include a variety of topics that vary each year according to the needs of the current graduating class. In the past, topics have included: budgeting, renting, networking, and community building. This is a great resource to prepare students for the transition to graduate school or the workforce.
  • Senior Week
    • This is a week of events put together by our team and the Office of Alumni Relations to celebrate the seniors as they wrap up their time as a Captain. Senior Week occurs during the week leading up to the Spring Commencement ceremony, consisting of events such as Grad Dash, Bingo, Senior Toast, Candlelight Ceremony, and more. Students graduating the December before are able to participate in Senior Week as desired.

Engagement Meetings

Our team offers engagement meetings to all students to help them navigate how to get involved during their time at CNU. Students will have the opportunity to meet with a current student or staff member to set goals, formulate a plan to take that first step, and connect with the appropriate resources to make it happen. These meetings are a resource to students that they can take advantage of as frequently as desired. Students can request a meeting through the Compass or by contacting our office.
