Dr. Doughty received his Ph.D. in particle physics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1984, after which he joined the faculty of Christopher Newport University as an assistant professor. At CNU he was instrumental in developing the Applied Physics major, the graduate program in Applied Physics and Computer Science and the ABET accredited program in Computer Engineering. In 2005 he became the chair of the department of Physics, Computer Science and Engineering, and in 2009 was named dean of the newly created College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences. As dean he oversaw the creation of two new life-science majors in cellular and molecular biology and neuroscience, as well as majors in biochemistry and computational and applied mathematics. In 2014 he was named Provost of the University.
