Our Next President

Christopher Newport has embarked on a national search for a new president. We plan for the next president to take office in the summer of 2023.

It is the Board of Visitors’ responsibility to ensure that the remarkable success of Christopher Newport is carried into the future with the next right leader at the helm – and we will rise to that challenge. To that end, I have appointed a search committee that fairly represents the rich diversity of our campus and includes representatives of important stakeholders, including the Board of Visitors, faculty, staff, alumni, students as well as community leaders. Our committee is committed to completing this national search with great success.

We will work to make this process as transparent and inclusive as possible, mindful that confidentiality safeguards must be placed on personnel matters. As the search unfolds, we will ask the entire Christopher Newport family to offer advice and will announce opportunities for the public, alumni, faculty, students and community leaders to offer input on our selection process. Your thoughts about Christopher Newport’s priorities and the qualities we should see in our next president will help us to describe the character and assets of the new leader we are seeking for our university. As a member of the Christopher Newport community, your participation in the presidential search process is vital to the future success of the university.

Over the coming months, with the help of the executive search firm Buffkin/Baker and legal counsel Senior Assistant Attorney General Deb Love, the search committee will meet frequently to refine the presidential search process, establish a timeline, host listening forums, review input, develop the leadership profile of the next president and launch the formal recruitment. This page will be kept up to date to keep the university community informed of progress, share information, solicit input and feedback, and detail the policies and principles guiding this search. Please check back regularly for updates.
