The Four Pillars
At Christopher Newport we encourage you to explore meaningful co-curricular involvement that will amplify your academic accomplishments. Our Four Pillars – undergraduate research, internships, study abroad and service – are solid supports that will help you gain vital real-world experience along the way to becoming an engaged citizen and leader.
Undergraduate Research
You don’t have to wait until graduate school to take a deep dive into the complex problems that face our world. At CNU you can pursue research in nearly any field under the guidance of our renowned faculty – including many paid opportunities – from day one.
Undergraduate research is more than just a learning opportunity. It’s also helpful as you consider a career path or if you plan to go to graduate school. The real world is more like research than a classroom.
Internships
Internships, like undergraduate research, can guide the direction of your future studies and career. Internships also offer the possibility of securing your first job. Companies love the audition aspect of internships, and permanent jobs are frequently the result.
We offer life-long career resources for CNU students and alumni, with programs and services that can help you choose your major, write a great resume, find an internship or job, or get into the graduate school of your dreams.
Study Abroad
Students need to immerse themselves in another culture in order to understand how others work and live, as well as how they see us.
At Christopher Newport, you can find study abroad opportunities that fit your goals, regardless of your major. You can travel in groups with faculty leaders, study alongside other U.S. students in a foreign country or attend an overseas school – including an amazing semester-long residency in Scotland at the University of Glasgow, one of the top universities in the world.
Service
At CNU, we care about minds and hearts. You’ll get a great education here, and, if you are committed and work hard, you will be successful after you leave.
But there’s more to it than that. We encourage students to engage in the community and world, to share your gifts and talents, and to learn how your interests and skills can make a real difference in the lives of others.
