Areas of Study

BAEd in Elementary Education

Becoming a great teacher means embarking on a program of study that will give you both the content and pedagogical knowledge and skills you need to be a successful teacher. Evidence-based instruction and clinical/field experiences will prepare you to be highly competent in the delivery and differentiation of instruction to meet elementary students’ learning and developmental needs.

Application to the BAEd in Elementary Education Program

Current CNU students may apply to the BAEd in Elementary Education after they have accumulated 45 credits and have a 2.7 GPA. The applicant’s entire application package will be examined holistically. Therefore, students who do not have a GPA of 2.7 at the time of their application may be considered for admission based on a record of improvement over time. The following materials will be presented at time of application:

  • Completed application form (available in the Teacher Preparation Office in McMurran 253)
  • Test scores that come close to the benchmark required (See table below)
  • College transcript
  • Supporting documents for in-state tuition privileges (VA residents)
  • Resume
  • Two professional recommendations (professor, manager, supervisor, etc.)

It is recommended students have had field work experience with children and/or in an educational context evident on their resume. Experience in a classroom setting is preferred.

Course-based field work

Some of your courses will embed classroom experiences that may include observation, tutoring or working with students in small groups.

Student-teaching internship

The teacher internship is the culminating experience of the program. The internship includes 14 weeks of teaching in local school divisions. As your internship progresses, you gradually assume all duties of a regular classroom teacher, including lesson planning and delivery, grading and parent conferencing.

Field experiences are arranged through the Office of Teacher Preparation or individual course instructors and are completed in the Newport News Public School System.
