Department of Philosophy and Religion
In the Department of Philosophy and Religion, we investigate big questions: the nature of existence, reality, knowledge, ethics, and beauty—and, for students who choose that path, religious belief and practice. Students can major in philosophy with philosophy courses only, or they can pursue optional pathways, including concentrations in pre-seminary or studies in religion.
Building on the historical and cross-cultural foundations of these topics, students learn to critically interrogate their practical consequences for our communities, whether by exposing logical fallacies in political discourse, investigating the ethics of artificial intelligence, or articulating responses to world religious conflict. We also offer a philosophy of law minor for students interested in legal reasoning, constitutional theory, and the foundations of justice and rights.
Our curriculum develops marketable skills—analytic problem solving, ethical leadership, and clear writing—and our majors consistently score in top percentiles on standardized tests (e.g., GRE, MCAT, LSAT), preparing graduates for law, medicine, business, seminary, graduate school, and careers in education, technology, government, nonprofit work, and more.
