Beyond the Classroom

English majors have many opportunities to expand on classroom learning through rigorous research, internships and more. Through the expertise learned in our program, many serve their fellow students as writing consultants in the Center for Student Success and also assist faculty as writing associates.

Internships in professional writing link students with local businesses, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies, and offers you experience in technical and grant writing.

Christopher Newport features two student publications on campus: The Captain’s Log weekly newspaper is the student voice on campus and offers students the opportunity to work as writers, editors, photographers, graphic designers and salespeople. Currents is an annual literary magazine that provides the opportunity to express one’s artistic voice through prose, poetry and art.

The English major with distinction program cultivates exceptional skills in research, writing, service and leadership, and prepares students to succeed in many careers or graduate school. The program has rigorous academic and service requirements.

Sigma Tau Delta international English honor society provides cultural stimulation and promotes interest in literature and the English language.

The Jean Everitt Journalism Lecture Series brings leaders in professional journalism and journalism education to campus for engaging lectures and symposia that address the pressing issues in journalism today.
