Christopher Newport University (CNU) students have the opportunity to participate in the Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (NROTC) through a cross-registration agreement with Hampton University (HU). This prestigious program offers leadership training, military education, and the path to becoming a commissioned officer in the United States Navy or Marine Corps.

  • Graduate as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy or Marine Corps

Who Can Participate?

CNU students may enroll in the HU NROTC program in one of the following ways:

  1. Scholarship Students
  • Selected via national competition or in-college application, these students receive full financial support, including:
  • Tuition and fees
  • Textbook stipend
  • Monthly subsistence allowance ($250–$400)
  1. College Program Students
  • Non-scholarship students who participate in NROTC training and may become eligible for scholarships later. Starting in their junior year, they receive a $300 monthly stipend.
  1. Naval Science Course Participants
  • Students not enrolled in either program may still take Naval Science courses at HU on a space-available basis.

Academic Details

  • All courses are registered through CNU
  • Students earn CNU credit and grades for Naval Science coursework
  • Up to 12 NROTC credits count toward CNU graduation requirements
  • Additional credits appear on official transcripts Note: Participation does not result in a Naval Science major or minor.

Program Tracks

Four-Year Program

Designed for incoming freshmen and transfer students. Includes:

  • Basic Course (Years 1–2)
  • Advanced Course (Years 3–4)

Two-Year Program

Ideal for students who join in their sophomore year. Includes:

  • Summer training at the Naval Science Institute (NSI) in Rhode Island
  • Entry into the Advanced Course upon completion
