Students may participate in a Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (NROTC) via a cross-registration agreement with Hampton University (HU), which provides professional and leadership instruction to students who desire to serve as commissioned officers in the United States Navy or United States Marine Corps.

Students join the HU NROTC Program through either the Scholarship or College Program track. All applicants are given parity with other HU students to be admitted and to receive scholarships. Students who are neither Scholarship nor College Program students and who want to take Naval Science courses at HU are eligible to do so on a space-available basis after all Scholarship and College Program students have first enrolled in courses.

Participating students will register for all courses through CNU and will receive CNU credit and grades for all coursework. Students must comply with all CNU academic regulations and standards, as well as meet all standards at HU, to participate in the NROTC program.

Program Information

The Hampton University Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (HU NROTC) program offers two main courses of instruction: the Four-Year Program and the Two-Year Program. Both tracks are available to students, whether they have a scholarship or are in the non-scholarship College Program.

Four-Year Program

  • This is divided into a two-year Basic Course (freshman and sophomore years) and a two-year Advanced Course (junior and senior years).
  • While most students begin in the fall of their freshman year, it is possible to join the Basic Course in the spring semester.

Two-Year Program

  • This option is for students who did not participate in NROTC during their first two years.
  • Students must apply during their sophomore year to be considered.

Note: Note: If a student is accepted for an unaffiliated scholarship, they become a member of the unit immediately and must meet all NROTC standards and requirements.

The Naval Science Institute (NSI), in Newport, Rhode Island, offers an intensive six-week program in the summer for rising juniors who are unable to attend the first two years of Naval Science courses on campus. Successful attendance at NSI enables a student to be eligible for NROTC programs.

Scholarship recipients supplement classroom instruction with an at-sea training period each summer. College program students supplement classroom instruction with at-sea training during the summer between their junior and senior years. Similarly, Marine Corps option students attend the six-week Marine Officer Candidate School at Quantico, Virginia during the summer between junior and senior years.

Students interested in entering the Navy’s nuclear power program should have a college GPA greater than 3.00. While any major is acceptable, all applicants must have completed at least two semesters of calculus and two semesters of calculus-based physics. Those students with a major in science, mathematics, or engineering are most desirable.

NROTC scholarships are available to outstanding midshipmen who are highly motivated for active duty careers in either the United States Navy or the United States Marine Corps.

Four-year scholarships are awarded each year to high school seniors on the basis of nationwide competition. In addition, each year some outstanding current students are awarded scholarships for the remainder of their normal academic program. These scholarships may be awarded at the completion of the freshman or sophomore years.

Each scholarship pays for the student’s tuition, academic-related fees, a textbook stipend, and a $250-$400 per month subsistence allowance. The Navy ROTC also sponsors the College Program for non-scholarship students. This program offers a $300 per month stipend beginning in the junior year.

Program Requirements

CNU students will not earn an academic credential by participating in the NROTC program through Hampton University, but all Scholarship and College Program students are expected to pursue coursework as outlined by the HU Department of Naval Science. Students should refer to the program requirements at HU for complete information about the NROTC program. No more than twelve of the NROTC credits count toward the 120 credits needed for graduation. The remaining credits will appear on the student’s official transcripts.
