Center for Academic Success

Using a holistic approach that fosters independent learning, we help students identify obstacles or challenges to academic success, develop strategies to overcome them, and provide support systems and resources.

Academic Support Services

Academic coaching is a personalized, one-on-one meeting with a trained academic coach who can help you improve study skills and performance. Working with an academic coach can help you study smarter by developing skills in time management, goal setting and test preparation.

Our peer mentors are upperclassmen ready to offer support, experience and wisdom from the viewpoint of a student who has successfully learned to navigate the challenges of college life.

Christopher Newport students are committed to helping each other. Students who are having trouble with a specific class, need help mastering a concept or just want to review course material, can work with peer tutors to improve their performance. Our College Reading and Learning Association international certification assures the highest quality in services.

Tutoring is available in most 100 and 200-level courses and select 300-level classes. Students may log in to MyCNU to complete the tutoring orientation and sign up for an appointment or Group Review session.

In the Alice F. Randall Writing Center, professionally trained students provide hands-on assistance at all stages of the writing process: brainstorming ideas, organizing, developing examples, revising, editing and proofreading.

The Student-Athlete Academic Support Program is designed to enrich the academic success of student-athletes, with an emphasis on first- and second-year students. The program seeks to reinforce accountability for one's own academic and personal development, recognize and celebrate student-athletes’ academic successes, and encourage student-athletes to build strong relationships not only within their team, but also with faculty, staff and fellow classmates.

We provide a variety of workshops designed to help you discover new strategies for learning difficult material. Our Start Smart and Finish Strong workshop series focus on timely topics to support you and your studies throughout the semester.
