First-Generation Student Initiatives

Approximately 20% of Christopher Newport's incoming class are "first-generation", or first-gen, students – meaning they will be the first in their immediate family to graduate from a four-year college or university in the United States with their bachelor’s degree. Being the first in one's family to attend college is a joyous occasion, but can also come with challenges for the student and their families. The Center for Student Success is excited to welcome our first-gen students and support them throughout their journey at Christopher Newport.

First-gen students offer unique perspectives and experiences that our university values and is eager to add to. With campus events and activities, clubs and organizations, and the many traditions we offer, there are always ways to stay connected.

Resources

Many first-gen students come to college and are unfamiliar with terms used in higher education. They also may not have anyone to ask or be comfortable asking when they do come across something they don’t know about. That is why we have compiled a list of Higher Education Terms to Know as a reference guide to provide answers to some of those questions.

The Center for Student Success provides useful materials for students to utilize throughout the semester in our skill-based resources library. The library is categorized to easily identify and access resources specific to a student's needs!
