Services Offered

All currently enrolled, full-time students are eligible for our services. Students are not charged when they receive services at our office. We adhere to professional ethical standards and all state and federal laws regarding confidentiality.

We consult with any member of the Christopher Newport community – students, staff, faculty and parents – who has questions about him or herself or others.

We offer brief individual and group counseling for any currently enrolled student.

We work in close collaboration with University Police and other offices in emergency situations that require crisis response. University Police will contact the counselor on call to assist in mental health emergencies.

If you are experiencing a life-threatening or medical emergency that requires immediate medical attention, please contact University Police at (757) 594–7777.

Our office works collaboratively with a consulting psychiatrist who can prescribe medication when needed.

We provide a variety of outreach services, including presentations and programming, on many topics, including:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Working with groups and teams
  • Relationships
  • Sexual assault prevention and awareness
  • Alcohol
  • Communication skills

Please contact us if you would like more information about our outreach programs.

We work together with University Police and Health and Wellness Services to offer information, support and counseling for students who have been sexually assaulted.

We do not endorse or recommend a specific mental health service provider. For a listing of mental health options in the area, please refer to the providers listed below.
