Orientation and Student Engagement

Parent and Family Transition

Families play an important role in the transition and success of our students. We have developed a specific family program for orientation to ensure you receive valuable information on the expectations, resources and opportunities available at Christopher Newport.

Guests who register in the Admitted Student System will receive the following:

  • Registration to attend the in-person Setting Sail program
  • Orientation guidebook with information and answers to frequently asked questions
  • Access to summer newsletters and reminders

Guest registration is now open! In order to de-densify orientation sessions, we are limiting the number of in-person guests to two per student. We will also offer a virtual option for guests only. We will record presentations at sessions 1 and 2 and share these videos with guests who register for virtual orientation toward the end of June/early July.

Setting Sail is our in-person orientation program that will allow you to hear from several university leaders, faculty and staff. There will be a specific family track that will provide you with important information that will help you support your student. This program is only available to registered guests.

Please note that you will be separated from your student throughout the two-day experience. There are no programs for siblings.

You can register in the Admitted Student System. Your student should click My Orientation Reservation, and then click Guests to access the guest registration.

There is a $50 guest fee for each in-person registered guest. The fee covers the costs of provided meals, the Orientation Guidebook and program materials. There is no fee for the virtual orientation option.

The sessions are designed for parents/guardians. You will be separated from your student for the day. There are no programs for siblings.

We recommend that students and guests bring comfortable shoes to walk in, a water bottle, and jacket or sweater as room temperatures can be cool.

Cancellation and a refund for Setting Sail guest fees is available before May 26, 2021.

If you need to cancel, please email us at orientation@cnu.edu with the student name, CNU ID number, home address and the last 4 digits of their social security number.

We will mail a check in the student's name to the address provided. Refunds may take 4-6 weeks to process.

No, housing accommodations are not provided for guests. They are provided for students. For 2021, we will place one student per room with an adjoining bathroom that is shared with one additional student.
