Orientation and Student Engagement

Parent and Family Transition

Families play an important role in the transition and success of our students. We have developed a specific family program for orientation to ensure you receive valuable information on the expectations, resources and opportunities available at Christopher Newport.

Guests who register in the Admitted Student System will receive the following:

  • Orientation guidebook with information and answers to frequently asked questions
  • Virtual sessions with university leaders, faculty and staff throughout the summer. Topics include academic expectations, financial matters, health and safety, and more.

Due to the new regulations in Hampton Roads issued by Governor Northam and recent adjustments made by the university, we are canceling our in-person family orientation. Originally scheduled for the day following your student's move to campus, we will now be providing the intended additional content virtually. This cancelation only affects the family portion of our program.

Setting Sail is our in-person orientation program that will allow you to hear from several university leaders, faculty and staff. There will be a specific family track that will provide you with important information that will help you support your student. This program is only available to registered guests.

Please note that you will be separated from your student for the day. There are no programs for siblings.

You can register in the Admitted Student System. Your student should click My Orientation Reservation, and then click Guests to access the guest registration.

Yes, there is a $50 family guest fee that includes registration for two people. Each additional guest is $20.

Please note the sessions are designed for parents/guardians, and you will be separated from your student for the day. There are no programs for siblings.

Bring the orientation guidebook we mailed to you in early June. We also recommend students and guests bring a water bottle and jacket or sweater as room temperatures tend to be very cool in the summer.

If you registered for Setting Sail before the COVID-19 pandemic required us to adjust our summer plans, please re-register by June 30. We will process refunds for any positive balance on a student’s account at that time. While registration will remain open, the deadline for a refund is June 30, 2020.
