Summer Humanities Institute 2022
“The Pen is Mightier Than the Sword”
June 19-July 1, 2022
The year 2022 marks the 400th anniversary of Molière’s birth. As an essential writer during the Enlightenment, Molière is the most celebrated playwright France has ever known. Arguably doing more to shape French culture than Charlemagne, King Louis XIV or even Napoleon, his creative works inspired his contemporaries to strive for a more free and just society. Using humor, satire and unforgettable characters, Molière’s plays stand as an enduring testament to the power of the written word in Western history.
The 2022 Summer Humanities Institute (SHI) will offer students the opportunity to explore influential writers, thinkers and artists from across time periods and regions of the world, revealing the powerful role artistic endeavors have played in shaping contemporary society. Join our professors in an intellectual journey to uncover exactly why the pen is mightier than the sword when wielded by a skillful author, and how art really can change the world.
SHI is a fantastic opportunity to experience and participate in an ongoing conversation in humanities scholarship at Christopher Newport University. Participants will enjoy:
- Two courses for a combined three college credits
- A two-week stay in one of our amazing residence halls
- Engagement with faculty and staff
- Social engagements
- A sword-fighting course with an expert in stage combat
- A theater production
The SHI fosters valuable critical-thinking and writing skills. Plus, you will gain feedback from college professors before taking AP, IB or dual-enrollment courses, and earn three college credits toward graduation from Christopher Newport or transferable to another institution.
