Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance
At Christopher Newport, the performing arts are vibrant, collaborative, and inspiring. Whether your passion is acting, dancing, singing, playing an instrument, directing, composing, or designing for the stage, you’ll find a place here to grow as both an artist and a scholar.
CNU is unique, as we bring theatre, dance, and music into one dynamic and supportive community. You’ll work closely with faculty who are active professionals — performers, composers, choreographers, directors and designers — dedicated to mentoring the next generation of artists. All classes are taught by artist-scholars who bring real-world experience into the classroom and rehearsal hall.
Housed in the world-class Ferguson Center for the Arts, our department features exceptional rehearsal and dance studios, design labs, and scene and costume shops. Students perform in three stunning venues: the 1,700-seat Diamonstein Concert Hall, the 500-seat Peebles Theatre, and the flexible 250-seat Studio Theatre.
At CNU, you’ll be challenged and inspired to pursue your dreams, and prepared to make your mark on the world's stage.
As a member of Music CNU, whether you're a singer or instrumentalist, you'll find countless opportunities to shine. Our Music program offers dozens of performances each year - from solo recitals and chamber music to jazz band concerts, opera productions, and full ensemble showcases - giving you the stage to perform, collaborate, and grow as an artist.
Whether you're on stage or behind the scenes, Theatre CNU offers exciting opportunities to bring your talent to life. Each year, students create four mainstage productions, a dynamic annual dance concert, and a range of student-driven shows - with opportunities for actors, dancers, musical theatre performers, tech designers, and other theatre artists to shine.
Our dance minor allows you to pursue formal study while completing your degree in another field. Explore the theoretical and movement components of dance and engage in hands-on work to nurture your creativity and refine your skills. Join our community of performing artists, express yourself through movement, and unlock your potential as a dancer. Whether you aspire to perform professionally or simply enrich your dance journey, our program provides a platform for growth, exploration, and artistic expression.
