Education

Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from North Carolina State University in 1991. He then joined the faculty at Christopher Newport University, where he is currently a professor of mathematics. He has published over sixty papers in partial differential equations and classical analysis.
He is also the author of several acclaimed mathematics books, including Excursions in Classical Analysis (Mathematical Association of America, MAA Press, 2010), Monthly Problem Gems, and Classical Analysis—An Approach through Problems (CRC Press, 2021, 2023). More recently, he coauthored More Monthly Problem Gems (CRC Press, 2025), a sequel to Monthly Problem Gems.
Dr. Chen has served as a reviewer for the American Mathematical Society since 1991. He is also an associate editor of the MAA Problem Books Series and a member of the editorial board for the “Problems and Solutions” section of The American Mathematical Monthly.
