Majors & Minors

We offer a bachelor of arts degree in general foreign languages with majors and minors in classical studies (the study of ancient languages and cultures), French, German, and Spanish. We also offer four interdisciplinary minors and master of arts in teaching programs in Spanish and English as a Second Language (ESL).

We encourage students to integrate study abroad into their studies. Faculty members regularly teach summer courses overseas and help place students in semester- and year-long immersion programs overseas where they focus on such topics as language and literature, history and culture, politics and government, museum studies, and archaeology. Multiple clubs and honor societies also serve to enhance students’ experience with languages and cultures. Find more information about these programs under your desired major.

We offer instruction in eight languages:

  • Ancient Greek
  • Arabic
  • Chinese
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Latin
  • Spanish

To help you better understand these cultures and connect across disciplines, we also offer courses on world cultures, literature, mythology, gender studies, film, art and archaeology.

Beyond mastering a second language, courses strengthen critical thinking, writing and oral communication skills. Students learn to analyze texts, media and artifacts from multiple cultures; critically evaluate these materials from differing perspectives; and present ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
