University Police

The University Police Department is a full-time, professionally trained police department, responsible for the safety and welfare of the university community. We are committed to providing a safe and secure environment on campus.

We enforce all state laws and university regulations, and prevent, detect and investigate any criminal activity on the campus. Our officers have the same authority and obligation as other state and municipal police. Our jurisdiction includes all university-owned, leased and controlled property and the adjacent streets and sidewalks. We also maintain a mutual aid agreement with the Newport News Police Department.

All Christopher Newport University police officers are sworn and certified by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services.

Christopher Newport is designated a Crime Prevention Campus by the Virginia Criminal Justice Services Board. To attain this certification, a college or university must detail crime prevention goals, programs and accomplishments.
