Prepare to be captivated by the versatility of paper and all its creative possibilities when you step into the latest exhibition at The Mary M. Torggler Fine Arts Center. “Possibilities of Paper” reflects the inventive use of paper, elevating the medium from a conduit of art to center stage. Featuring 13 artists from the United States and Canada, the exhibition explores diverse techniques through works ranging from massive installations to intricate constructions.
The artists represented in the exhibition layer, suspend, cut, scatter, pattern, weave and fold paper to stunning effect. Additionally, several artists have reimagined common paper products, such as books, piñatas, maps, and paper plates, and created surprising new identities for these everyday objects. Along the way, the artists grapple with themes including identity, spirituality, history, the cosmos, and the creation and destruction of knowledge.
“One of the most exciting aspects of contemporary art is the way that artists continually challenge the kinds of objects that can be considered worthy tools for artmaking,” notes Torggler Executive Director Holly Koons. “At the same time, they unfailingly find new possibilities for artistic materials that have been used for centuries. This exhibition offers a window into the creative process among artists who explore the possibilities of paper.”
Artists participating in the exhibition include: Elizabeth Alexander, Jaq Belcher, Roberto Benavidez, Doug Beube, Charles Clary, Myriam Dion, Samuelle Green, Guy Laramée, Rosa Leff, John Noestheden, Matt Schlian, Eric Standley, and Michael Velliquette. The works on view are presented in collaboration with the artists, as well as JHB Gallery in New York City and Galerie Blouin Division in Montreal, Canada.
The Possibilities of Paper is free and open to the public. It will run from June 30 –October 15, 2023.
