National champions! Competing at the NCA College Nationals for the first time, the Christopher Newport University cheerleading squad had a memorable debut with the first NCA National Championship in program history after competition on Friday evening. The Captains earned the team's fifth all-time national title with a win of the Intermediate All-Girls Division III category which featured 19 of the top programs from around the nation.
With a score of 96.0278 in the finals on Friday, the Captains celebrated the top performance at the NCA College Nationals in the Ocean Center Arena in Daytona, Florida.
The victory is the latest in a string of five crowns in the last 10 seasons with the first four coming at the Cheer Ltd. College Open in 2014 and then in three straight years from 2017-19. All five have been won under the direction of head coach Erica Flanigan, who has guided the Captains since 2006.
Competing in the Intermediate All-Girls Division III category, the Captains posted the highest score in the prelims on Thursday night with an 85.8 out of 90. On Friday, CNU posted their second straight routine without a single deduction and scored an 86.633 for an overall winning mark of 96.0278 percent of a perfect score.
CNU bested the second-place team, Curry College, by over two full percentage points as the Colonels finished with a 93.7824 mark in the finals. Christopher Newport was the only team in the category to post a routine with zero deductions on Friday.
