Richard Long named VP at Christopher Newport

Former UVA and William & Mary development director will lead Advancement team

Christopher Newport University President William G. Kelly announced that Richard Long will be the Vice President for University Advancement. Long most recently served as Development Director for the UVA Health Children’s Hospital.

“Richard brings great energy and deep experience to this important position,” Kelly said. “He has excelled in leadership roles at three Virginia public universities. As his professional accomplishments and record as a college athlete demonstrate, Richard is anchored in excellence in all that he does.”

Long earned his undergraduate degree from Auburn University where he was a 3-time All-American as a swimmer and then a coach on multiple national championship teams. He earned his master's from William & Mary where he served as Director of Development for Alumni Engagement and Corporate Sponsorships. Prior to his tenure at William & Mary, he served as the Head Swimming and Diving Coach at James Madison University.

Long will serve as a key ambassador for the University, fostering strong partnerships with alumni, donors, community leaders, and other stakeholders to enhance Christopher Newport University's reputation, financial sustainability, and overall impact.

Long will begin his tenure at Christopher Newport on August 12, 2024.
